Earth Day 2009 is going to be a big volunteer event in Columbus! To find out more, check out the Columbus Earth Day 2009 Facebook group.
ShareBuilding on the success of the first citywide Earth Day event in 2007, Green Columbus organized and expanded the event in 2008. Volunteers worked 3-4 hour morning shifts at their choice of more than fifty worksites. In total, approximately 1,300 central Ohioans volunteered 4,700 hours planting trees, cleaning up parks and beatifying communities. At noon, volunteers made their way to Goodale Park for a “Zero Waste” Celebration (all waste was composted or recycled). Tips collected with beverage sales were used to purchase carbon credits to offset any greenhouse gas emissions associated with "Now Get Busy!" ensuring we truly left the planet better than we found it that day.
This year, we are going even bigger- it's going to take 2 full days to contain our Earth Day cheer. On April 18th, we are looking for thousands of volunteers to come out and support over 50 worksites throughout the city. Then, the next day's festival will be a full day to celebrate all of your hard work.
